Effective Communication Skills

In the 21st century, people say that “the world becomes a village”. This implies that we are in the age of information technology (IT) and it is within our range to be accessible to any type of information, news and media. The challenge is how to communicate each other (from small committees to multinational corporations across different countries) using modernized technologies. Effective communication becomes of paramount importance to be successful in different areas; from volunteer community service to international organization, especially in the IT age.
In my opinion, effective communication skills are the most basic foundation to be successful in a way as to have more useful and good friends, to increase and gain the interested knowledge and to make prosperous of the population and hence the country.  If you can deliver a message clearly, concisely and in an attractive way, the receiver will be able to do things without confusion and this can make to increase the efficiency of the productivity.  Effective communication can make us to build good relationship not only in organizations but also in family to make the bond stronger.
If two countries want to negotiate on a particular topic, the way the two countries communicate impact a lot on becoming fruitful of the negotiation. When the leaders fail to communicate effectively, the more unresolved problems are occurred. Hence, people are trying to be a more effective communicator nowadays. And I also want to possess more effective communications skills so that to get a better chance of both a successful career and building up and raising my country better in a professional way.

  1. Hi Thu Win,

I am not certain what you meant by "to increase and gain the interested knowledge and to make prosperous of the population and hence the country". This phrase sounds rather ambiguous. Perhaps you would want to elaborate more on it?

There is one part that I do not find myself agreeing to. "If you can deliver a message clearly, concisely and in an attractive way...", I don't think communication is about conveying your message in an attractive manner. As long as it's clear and concise, I think it is fine.

Anyway, just my 2 cents. =)

  2. Hey Thu Win,

I do agree about the part where you say that by having effective communication there would be an increase in productivity in terms of workplace.

If I'm not wrong, I believe that what you mean by the phrase "If you can deliver a message clearly, concisely and in an attractive way...", that the sender is articulating precisely what is needed to be done and the receiver is able to understand exactly what the sender is saying. However, I agree with Valerie on the point that the message does not need to be packaged in an attractive manner as it is not trying to get someone on your good side but rather, telling it as what you feel.

  3. Hello! Effective communication does play a huge role in increasing the productivity and efficiency of the workplace. A lot of time would be wasted on trying to sort out messages if they weren't specific and concise.

I do agree with Thu Win to a certain extent that messages could be packaged in an attractive way. For example, in a project it would be better to say probably we can take a look at other alternatives rather than telling the person I think your idea is lousy isn't it? Then again, this is just my point of view! (:

  4. I think it really depends on context. In the world of work sometimes the formalities can be done away within the own company. Being clear and concise will reduces misunderstanding and reduce time for decoding thus increasing efficiency.

However if you are talking about building relationship or at the start where everybody is new then definitely phrasing of words does matter.

Definitely there is no right or wrong here. Just a balancing point we need to seek.

    Cheers everyone

  5. Hello Thuwin,
It is interesting to see how you relate effective communication with politics .And just by reading your blog post, I can tell that you are patriotic towards your country. :D Thanks for providing us with new insights to effective communication.
By the way, today in class, when you mention about meditation, I find it very interesting too.Meditation not only allows you to increase self-awareness but it also allows you to do reflections and improve your ablity to focus. It is something like yoga,an exercise with soothes the body and calms the soul. :D

  6. Hi everyone, sorry for late response.

Thank you Shihan and See Chai for sharing your view and answering back Tiffany and Valarie's argument.Yes, my points are the same as what Shihan and See Chai said. And I believe that sometimes, it is difficult to decide right or wrong and depends a lot on conditions such as cultural background, the mood the two people have while discussing, peer pressure, etc.
To Deenise: If you are interested in meditation , NUSBS is organizing a basic meditation course which is on Wed from 630 to 815 pm at YIH function room.

Thank you all for sharing your views, :-)

  7. Thu Win: I think it is a very sincere post. I could sense your usual enthusiasm and sincerity even in a blog post, which is commendable. Also, I liked how you started with a phrase. That is a good way to start.

About your points, I think it is similar to many of the other classmates but I think you might need to come up with clearer topic sentences for each paragraph to make the post more clear. Try this guideline: Topic sentence, Example, Elaborate the example and topic sentence, Summary, short for TEES. I hope this helps. If others have better suggestions, post a comment so that I can learn as well!

  8. Hi Thu Win!

I agree with you that the World is becoming a village. In certain occasions, cultural differences between individuals can affect the effectiveness in delivery of a message. I guess like what we had learnt in class on Monday, in order to achieve effective communications, it is important to know your audience. For example, without knowing Burmese culture, we will assume that your name is Thu Win but it is actually Yee Thu Win because Burmese do not have a surename in their name. Similarly, without understanding such differences, wrong assumptions could be made which will affect the communication between two persons. I guess this will be a challenge that we will need to overcome more frequently in the future.

  9. Thanks, Thu Win, for setting up this attractive blog and making this heart-felt initial post. You sumarize the value of effective comm skills well. I think it's especially commendable that you want to develop skills so that you can serve your country. I am a bit curious which skills you think you need most, aside from the English language skills.Which comm skills would serve you most when you return to Myanmar?

Just a few pointers here for language use:

    1) to be accessible to >>> to access

    2) to communicate each other >>> to communicate with each other

    3) to increase and gain the interested knowledge >>> to increase and gain knowledge

    4) to make prosperous of the population and hence the country. >>> to make help develop prosperity for our society and hence our country.

    Thanks!

  10. Lin Hui: My name is Ye Thu Win ; not Yee Thu Win :P
Brad: Thanks for pointing out language usage. I think administrative skills will be needed most. I feel that people working in my country are busy all the time. Although they are busy, their work is not as effective as it should be.I hope that communication skill can be integrated into administrative skill effectively to make everything better.
